Pointers

Pointers are a powerful messaging tool that associate related data elements to reduce repeating data.

Pointers can simplify your message when used correctly, by pointing to information that has already been provided instead of repeating it multiple times.

Use Supplier example as first ‘point’ (HAHA!)
A commonly used example of pointers in the NZ WCO data set is the supplier code. An import declaration can have different tariff items coming from the same supplier. Instead of repeating the supplier information for each Goods Item (GAGI), the pointer will simply refer back to the supplier provided in the header information.

By providing fewer or more pointers, we are able to augment the level of detail for identifying the class or data set element that is needed.
